Apache Gate Fort Sill - On June 22, 2019, dozens of survivors and descendants of World War II Japanese-American internment camps traveled from across the country to protest the planned detention of child refugees at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Six survivors of the camp, Satsuki Ina, Kiyoshi Ina, Chizu Omori, Emiko Omori, Paul Tomita and Nikki Nojima Louis, gathered for a press conference at Fort Sill's Bentley Gate to share their stories of arrest and family separation

The ACLU of Oklahoma and Lawton local police supported the de-escalation, so the survivors were able to finish their speech and move to Shepler Park for a large rally in partnership with AIM Indian Territory , Dream Action Oklahoma, Black Lives Matter OKC, CAIR Oklahoma, and other.. local groups.

Following our protest at Bentley Gate, members of Tsuru for Solidarity organized a memorial service in Shepler Park with Reverend Duncan Ryuken Williams and AIM Spiritual Advisor Michael Topaum, in memory of all those affected by the violence of the state.

"At the beginning of the demonstration they conducted a Buddhist ceremony: the celebration of the Heart Sutra when six camp survivors offered incense in front of the Buddha statue carved in Manzanar in 1943, which I borrowed from the Zenshuji Temple in LA This ceremony was part of a healing ceremony led by Michael Topaum, the spiritual leader of the American Indian Movement, which was based on the fact that Fort Sill was a prison camp for members of the Apache tribe and that the US has a history.out of their homes and into "Indian schools".
After the healing ceremony, we opened a space for local groups from the indigenous, Latino, immigrant, and other like-minded communities to demonstrate against the incarceration of immigrants.

FORT SILL, Okla.-- Fort Sill officials have been working for more than three years to get state-of-the-art doors to the gates of the site. The future will start from September 7.
On that date, construction will begin on the first phase at Fort Sill's Apache Gate to build the gateway structure for the automatic facility.
"AIE will go where the current small guard is," said Fort Sill Marshal Bob Pirtle. "It will bring a bit more road width for the guards, it will bring high islands, it will bring guard booths, it will bring a much better experience and working conditions for the guards. It will give them a better working environment, much better."
Contractors have told Pirtle that construction should take about 90 days per door, weather permitting. Traffic at the Apache gate will be diverted to go under the large channel that was built at the gate about a year ago. Pirtle said that after the Apache Gate is completed, which should be in early December, contractors will begin work on the East Key Gate to coincide with the annual basic education retreat and be completed before the summer holidays. summer for students.

Even after the physical structure is finished, drivers going to the site won't notice much difference other than the appearance of the structure. Anyone in a vehicle must still show a government-issued ID card to gate guards through Mobilisa scanners.
"We're not going to eliminate Mobilisa," Pirtle said. "It's a very good tool, because we can use Mobilisa as a random anti-terrorist measure. We can install and control the gate on a remote road, we can control workplaces, so Mobilisa is an important tool for us. It is. ..".
Pirtle said the AIE is scheduled to be fully operational by 2013. He said it's a common access card type system where a rider swipes the card and a guard in the guard cell sees a computer screen that lights up in different colors.
"It's very simple," Pirtle said. "If the screen turns green, the arm [of the barricade] goes up and you get to Fort Sill. If the screen turns red, there's a problem."

He said the problems could be as simple as a mistake in the registration process or the fact that the cardholder could have the decision to close them.
Pirtle said the next three years will be spent training Fort Sill gate guards, police and administrative staff on how to use the system and making sure the check-in process goes as smoothly as possible.
Pirtle said one of the keys to keeping the system running smoothly for drivers, soldiers and postal workers is to register properly when the time is right.
"You have to go back in and re-register your vehicle," he said. "The registration you have now will not work at the AIE. The AIE is more in-depth, there is a tag (radio frequency identification) that will be placed on your vehicle and you will get a new photo ID. So when you come to the door, matches the card, the RFI tag and the image."

Pirtle said he expects registration of Fort Sill residents and staff to begin about a year before the actual implementation of the system.
The provost marshal is asking Fort Sill drivers for patience while the gates are constructed. He said he understands the construction, on and off the pole, can be frustrating, but the end result will be beneficial for everyone.
"We work hard on the security of our doors and AIE will make us better," Pirtle said. "AIE will give us the opportunity to be more secure, AIE will give us the opportunity to strengthen our security perimeter around the mail and make us a harder target for someone who might have terrorist designs or just normal criminal activity . . . So the IEA will be a good thing for us and we're happy about it."
