Some homes have good bones and some homes have residents who know good design. Amazingly, Kirsten and Eric's apartment in downtown Vicenza offers both! With carefully selected items from estate sales and antique stores in Europe and the US, this couple has quite a collection of fine objects from their travels around the world.

Kirsten is a dedicated entertainer and hostess, and her home has so many perfect spots for her many guests - whether they're weary travelers visiting Italy who need to unload in the guest room, or a bunch of friends stopping by for a legendary party in her open kitchen and living room. Kirsten and Eric's home is both cosy, welcoming and functional, while being full of many things to spark conversation.

Our style: Eric likes things very industrial and rustic, but I'm a magpie and a maximalist who seeks an eclectic glamour. If he had his way, all would be bare pipe and unfinished wood; If I had mine, we'd live in a gilded, mirrored palace of sin. My personal style is heavily influenced by my stylish mother and grandmother, and his is a reflection of his laid-back hometown of Los Angeles. it's a struggle

Inspiration: My friend Will's mother's house, descriptions of parlors in Southern Gothic novels, hotels designed by Kelly Wearstler, the homes of my family's matriarchs, and anything I think Elizabeth Taylor would have bought.

Favorite Element: I love colorful things! I love rugs! I will always buy a good carpet. They tie the room together.

Biggest Challenge: We've both moved so much for our respective jobs that nothing is ever settled — what works in one house won't work in the next, so we have a dozen or so boxes labeled "not for this house." In this particular house we have big problems with the extreme ceilings and not completely straight walls.

What friends say: Almost everyone comments on the rugs, our kitchen sink (which is about 400 years old!) and our kitchen table. "Made for Old Fashioned Entertainment" - Leslie; "This is exactly the apartment I think my friend would have in Italy" - my friend Tylyn; "Sophisticated and classy, yet extremely homely," - my friend Sarah; "I feel as free to photogenically lounge around in one of your booths as I do to argue with you over your kitchen table" - also Leslie.

Biggest Embarrassment: We have a lot of used stuff that's pretty broken; There are a few outdated and/or broken items that I replace one at a time. For example, our sofas are older than me, but damn, a good one is expensive, so we keep putting off buying it. I also tend to save pieces with "good bones" and then talk about fixing them for years and then never do.

Proud DIYer: I consider IKEA furniture a DIYer, but all these long years later, I'm still happy with my bar cart as well as my many gold leaf and mirror glass projects. Some of my favorite projects (like an abandoned shopping cart I turned into a rolling herb garden) currently live in storage.

Biggest treat: Our only really expensive item was our kitchen table, but I think our wild sheep rug is the most lavish. I always spend good bedding. We have plenty of booze in stock, of course, if that counts.

Best advice: Don't try to do everything at once; Take one perfect thing at a time. Gradually build up on things you don't love. My house will probably always be a work in progress.

Dream sources: I already shop from my dream sources which are estate sales but I would like to be able to buy what I want there without thinking twice. I have very low requirements for my dreams.
